General Summary/Purpose
Function as a Psychedelic Session Guide/Facilitator at the Johns Hopkins' Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research (CPCR). Assist in experimental sessions for an outpatient pharmacological research protocol with psychedelics. Perform data collection functions as required by the research protocol.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with Lead Guide/Facilitators to provide steady interpersonal support to study volunteers.
  • Conduct 2-4 hour preparatory and integration meetings with participants.
  • Monitor participants during 8-hour experimental sessions.
  • Record data at specific time points during each session.
  • Provide guidance and steady interpersonal support to participants during study sessions to facilitate resolution of psychodynamic issues and conflicts.
  • Demonstrate effective crisis resolution.
  • Administer the psychosocial assessment (SCID and others) to potential volunteers.
  • Responsible for preparation of session room and equipment, compiling necessary forms, and providing professional explanations of such matters as orientation procedures, payment procedures, practice sessions, running of sessions, patient evaluations, and transportation of subjects (if needed).
  • Conduct interviews with potential volunteers to ascertain drug histories, medical information, and witnessing of consent procedures.
  • Scheduled subject visits, confirm the availability of the necessary test area facilities, and coordinate with study team personnel.
  • Run research protocol sessions with human study participants. Collect and enter physiological and behavioral data into database. Data collection tasks may include collection of urine and saliva samples, administration of self-reports, independent observation of subject's condition, and monitoring of physiological measures.
  • Input, organize, edit, and verify data. Score subjective report forms filled out by research volunteers.
  • Assist the research team in the preparation and organization of datasets for final analysis.
  • Responsible for maintaining current and backup copies of research data and ensuring the security and confidentiality of the data.
  • Serve as back-up for research protocols (other than primary assignment) as needed.
  • Maintain session equipment.
  • Interact with faculty and staff on research teams, in clinical programs, and with educational outreach initiatives to strategize about their communication needs.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree in health sciences, psychology, social work, pastoral counseling, or related clinical field required.
Experience: 2 years counseling, psychotherapy, or directly related experience. Related experience in a clinical or research setting required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's level training in psychotherapy.

Technical Qualifications Or Specialized Certifications

  • Certification/license as appropriate based on field of study noted above.

  • Ability to work in a clinical setting with research participants with a variety of mental health conditions.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact effectively within and outside the department.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures.
  • Skilled in computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.

Specific Physical Requirements For The Job

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.
  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
